Parish Council Clarifies Position on Parish Land and Development

Hooe Parish Council is aware of recent concerns about potential development on parish land and would like to reassure residents that no decision has been made to sell Dunks Field or any other parish property.

At the Parish Land Committee meeting on 17th February 2025, the council agreed to carry out due diligence regarding Dunks Field, which is land towards the far end of Mill Lane on the left, south of the recreation ground (approx. 2.2 acres, currently untenanted and left to fallow). This is a standard process to gather all the necessary information before considering any future use of the land. Taking this step helps ensure that any decision made is fully informed and in the best interests of the community.

Looking at the future use of parish land is never a simple process. There are many factors to weigh up, including financial considerations, environmental impact, benefits to the community, legal requirements, local services and infrastructure, the heritage and character of the village, and the long-term strategic plans of the community. Due diligence is an important part of this process, helping us explore all options carefully before making any choices.

We also want to reassure residents that there are no hidden agendas or pre-determined plans to sell parish land. Any discussions around parish assets follow the proper legal processes, are handled with transparency, and remain subject to public review and accountability; certain matters, such as individual tenants’ agreements or leases are subject to confidentiality, this is the law and they cannot be public.

The Parish Council is committed to acting in the best interests of Hooe, ensuring openness and clear communication throughout this process. If any decisions are to be made, especially involving sale of land for development or other significant change of use, the appropriate consultation processes would be followed. We welcome any questions from residents and encourage everyone to reach out if they have any concerns; we’re here to listen and work together for the good of our community.
